The petition to the US Congress reads:

"For many children, school lunch is the only healthy meal of the day. Protect healthy school meals and don’t roll back healthy nutrition standards in the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act of 2015."

Tell Congress: Don’t gut healthy school meals

For many children, especially those from low income families, school lunch is their only healthy meal of the day.

But Congressional Republicans – many of whom are bankrolled by junk food companies and Big Ag corporations – are attempting to gut healthy school meals and replace them with more fatty, sugary processed foods.

Congress will soon consider reauthorizing critical child nutrition legislation, and food industry lobbyists are pulling out all the stops convince lawmakers to add more junk food in school breakfasts and lunches. We must act now to urge Congress not to roll back healthy school meals.

Tell Congress: Don’t gut healthy school meals.

In 2010, Michelle Obama helped pass landmark legislation, called the Healthy-Hunger Free Kids Act, which set new standards for healthy foods for children. And the effect these new standards have had on kids’ health has been enormous. Most junk foods have been eliminated from schools and children are now getting more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables and less sugar, fat, and salt in their meals.

This fall, Congress must reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, which includes these new standards, but processed food companies and their lobbyists are on the attack, running a coordinated smear campaign in order to gut the standards and increase their bottom line. And it’s no surprise: the federal school meal program is a billion dollar industry, and processed food companies will do whatever it takes to get their junk foods back in schools.

Tell Congress: Don’t gut healthy school meals.

While the so-called School Nutrition Association, the powerful industry front group who represents the likes of Pepsi, Domino’s, and General Mills, would us to believe kids are throwing away their healthy lunches, the Healthy-Hunger Free Kids Act has been a huge success. Today, according to the USDA, 90% of schools are meeting the requirements, and school children are eating 23% more vegetables and 16% more fruit.2

With childhood obesity rapidly becoming a national epidemic -- nearly one in three children is overweight or obese1 -- the last thing children need is more unhealthy, high calorie junk food in their diets.

This campaign is winnable. Last year, nearly 130,000 CREDO activists stepped up to prevent Congress from advancing a dangerous plan to eliminate healthy school nutrition standards, and we can do it again.

With the Healthy-Hunger Free Kids Act starting to improve the health of kids across the country, now is not the time to gut this important legislation. We must increase public pressure on Congressional Republicans to ensure low income children across the country continue to have access to healthy meals at school.

Tell Congress: Don’t gut healthy school meals.

Thanks for all you do to protect healthy school meals.
