President Obama: Keep fossil fuels in the ground

Fossil fuels harvested from federal lands and waters are one of the largest sources of global warming pollution in the United States. In fact, nearly 25 percent of all U.S. energy-related emissions come from our public lands, which are completely under President Obama’s control.1

While the president has taken some positive steps in the battle against climate change, his administration continues to allow dirty energy companies to rake in billions drilling, fracking, and mining fossil fuels on our public lands.

On September 15, we’re joining our climate allies in a massive petition delivery in front of the White House urging the president to end all new federal fossil fuel leasing on our public lands and waters.

Tell President Obama: Keep fossil fuels in the ground.

The Obama administration doesn’t seem to get it. With scientists warning that we need to leave at least 80 percent of global fossil fuel reserves in the ground, we can’t afford to continue leasing publicly-owned fossil fuels to the highest bidder.2 Yet a 2014 White House fact sheet boasted that “production of oil and gas has grown each year” under President Obama and that the administration has “held 30 separate oil and gas lease sales, offering 5.7 million acres for lease by industry, the most in a decade.”3

Thanks to relentless activism of CREDO members, we have seen some great climate victories in the past year, including a temporary moratorium on federal coal leasing and a ban on offshore drilling in the Atlantic.

Unfortunately our work is not done, and the president is still not getting the message. Just recently, the Obama administration opened up 24 million acres for oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, holding the lease sale online and behind closed doors in order to limit public opposition.4

With Obama’s presidency in its waning days, his administration must end all new fracking, drilling, and mining on public lands and waters for good.

Tell President Obama: Keep fossil fuels in the ground.

    Thanks for all you do.
