Pass the New Motor Voter Act and make voting easier in California

In 2014, California ranked 38th in voter registration, with nearly 7 million Californians who were eligible to vote but unregistered. We fared even worse when it comes to voter participation, ranking 43rd out of all 50 states.

Now there’s big momentum for a bill that would remove barriers to voting and start to address the problem. The California New Motor Voter Act would increase voter registration and participation in California by automatically registering Californians to vote when they apply for, or renew, their driver’s license.1

The bill has already passed the Assembly and a vote in the Senate is expected in the next few days. We can’t afford to wait any longer to remove barriers to voting and make it easier for all Californians to register and vote.

The California New Motor Act was sponsored by California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and jointly authored by Assemblymembers Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), and Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento). As Sec. of State Padilla said recently, the bill would “provide an opportunity to help millions of Californians participate in our elections” and “would be a significant step in addressing the record low voter turnout we saw during the 2014 General Election.”

When voter registration and participation rates are low, the electorate is skewed toward conservatives. Making it easier for all Californians to register and vote will help level the playing field in elections and could lead to a more progressive and representative legislature, as well as more desirable outcomes on California ballot measures.

In states all over the country, Republicans are enacting discriminatory photo ID laws, decreasing early voting, eliminating polling locations and doing everything they can think of to make it harder for people to vote. Right now in California we have the opportunity to go on offense and strengthen our democracy by making it easier for people to register and vote.
