"The oil industry plans to flood American waterways with tar sands crude oil tankers and barges that would threaten our oceans, coastlines, marine life and climate. Ban tar sands oil tankers from U.S. waters."

    Tell President Obama: Ban tar sands oil tankers from U.S. waters.

    The company that wanted to build the Keystone XL pipeline is now desperate to find an alternate route to transport dirty tar sands oil from Canada to Gulf Coast refineries.

    Their current plan would use the proposed Energy East pipeline – the largest proposed tar sands oil pipeline to date – to traverse most of Canada, then employ tankers and barges to ship oil down the entire U.S. Eastern Seaboard to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

    We can’t let the same company that tried to build the Keystone XL pipeline use another route to sneak dirty tar sands oil through the United States. President Obama can stop this plan and others like it by imposing a moratorium on all tar sands oil traffic in U.S. waters.

    Tell President Obama: Bar tar sands oil tankers from U.S. waters.

    The proposed Energy East pipeline would send more than a million barrels per day of dirty tar sands oil from Alberta to Canada’s eastern seaport of Saint John, New Brunswick. From there, hundreds of supertankers per year would travel south from the tip of Maine, around Florida’s peninsula, and on to refineries along the Gulf Coast.

    This high-risk project represents, at minimum, a 300 percent increase in crude oil traffic down the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. And the costs are largely irreversible:

    • Oil spills, ship strikes, and deafening noise would threaten endangered marine mammals and fisheries;
    • The technology does not exist to effectively contain or clean tar sands oil;
    • Allowing Canadian tar sands to reach U.S. refineries would dramatically increase carbon pollution at a time when the U.S. and Canada need to slash emissions.

    There is too much at stake, and we have a chance to stop a potential disaster now by convincing President Obama to immediately ban dangerous tar sands tankers and barges from U.S. waters.

    Tell President Obama: Bar tar sands oil tankers from U.S. waters.

    Thank you for speaking out.
