California’s environmental leadership is more important now than ever. As the Trump administration wages a war on science and several states are considering laws to encourage classroom climate denial, California must continue to invest in our future.

Senate Bill (S.B.) 4241 would fund environmental literacy for California’s 6.2 million public school students. By providing access to quality environmental education, the bill would help ensure that the next generation of Californians can pursue careers in science and green technology and work to solve pressing environmental challenges like the fight to slow climate change.

S.B. 424 would facilitate environmental literacy by funding a statewide body, the California Regional Environmental Education Community Network. The network would link schools with a range of community resources, from training opportunities and teaching materials for educators to outdoor learning experiences and green job employers for students.

While some California students already gain environmental literacy at school, the vast majority do not have meaningful access to environmental education. All students deserve learning opportunities that engage their natural curiosity, encourage scientific thinking and teach critical thinking skills.

Research shows that environmental education improves academic performance, physical fitness, civic engagement and overall child development.2 By bringing students to nature centers, science museums, parks and other local environmental sites, the programs funded by S.B. 424 would enrich students’ lives and put learning in a real-world context.

The next generation of Californians will inherit a warming world with increasingly complex problems. California has a responsibility to prepare all of our young people to understand the environmental challenges they will face – from water pollution and drought to air quality and disappearing plant and animal species. Just as importantly, the state has an obligation to help young people pursue careers in climate solutions, including California’s growing green jobs and clean economy workforce.

S.B. 424 has been endorsed by the California Academy of Sciences, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, TreePeople, Climate Resolve, Dr. Jane Goodall, Michael Pollan and many other scientific organizations and leaders. Join them in calling on California to pass S.B. 424.
