Mayor Newsom, Thank you for giving Californians the freedom to marry

The California Supreme Court just got it right on one of the biggest issues of our time -- marriage equality. This morning it announced its ruling that all Californians have the right to marry whomever they want, regardless of that person's gender.

You'll remember this all started back in early 2004, when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom took the historic step of issuing marriage certificates to gay and lesbian couples at City Hall. That March, the California Supreme Court invalidated those marriage licenses, and almost immediately a lawsuit was filed challenging the state law that excludes same-gender couples from marriage. Now, the Court has ruled that marriage discrimination is fundamentally incompatible with our state's constitution.

The path that led to today's victory started right outside Mayor Newsom's door in San Francisco. So let's all send him a note of thanks. Please use the form at right to send him a message and say, "thank you for your courage."
