Tell Governor Sanford: Stop Offshore Oil Drilling

Next time you go to the beach with your family, would you like to see a mammoth oil rig only three miles off the coast?

There's been a moratorium on offshore oil drilling since 1981, but if President Bush has his way, there won't be for long. Last month, Senator John McCain reversed his previous position and called for lifting the moratorium that has protected our shores for the last 27 years. Days later, President Bush hopped on the bandwagon, demanding that Congress reverse this time-tested policy. Such action would be a disaster for the environment, a boon for the oil companies, and won't have any effect whatsoever on gas prices.

If Congress lifts the ban on offshore drilling, oil companies could start drilling as close as only three miles off the coast -- even if our state opposes it.

Fortunately, coastal states do have the power to fight back. By coming out against this reckless proposal, Governor Sanford is helping to ensure Congress will vote with us instead of with the President. We need to tell Governor Sanford to stand strong to protect our coast, no matter what kind of pressure the President puts on him. Sign this petition today to tell Governor Sanford: Do everything in your power to block Bush's scheme to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling.

"I believe that our coastline is a precious natural resource, and I urge you to keep fighting for it and to tell Congress to do the same. Lifting the moratorium on offshore oil drilling would be a disaster for the environment, a boon for the oil companies, and will have zero effect on gas prices. Keep standing strong on this important issue."
