Stop dangerous coal ash pollution in Louisville
Louisville Gas and Electric's (LG&E) Cane Run coal plant and the landfill where the plant's waste products are stored sit directly across the street from residential neighborhood Pleasant Ridge Park.
An important new study released last week, commissioned by LG&E itself, shows that many homes in the neighborhood are heavily contaminated by coal ash.1
Coal ash, which is more radioactive than nuclear waste2, is known to cause asthma and various other respiratory problems. One local resident whose son suffers from severe respiratory problems was told by her doctor, "you need to move."3
The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District is looking into the matter, but it hasn't yet committed to taking action to protect nearby residents from the Cane Run coal plant's coal dust pollution.
Tell the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District: Protect Louisville residents from harmful coal dust from LG&E's dirty Cane Run coal plant.
The Air Pollution Control District's mission is to "protect air quality in Louisville to ensure healthy air for breathing, economic security and prosperity for our citizens and future generations."4 Dealing with the coal ash pollution problem at the Cane Run coal plant is clearly within the agency's purview.
LG&E, for its part, insists that it operates within EPA's health-based standards.5 But the health impacts suffered by local residents, as well as LG&E's own recent study, indicate that this is a serious public health problem that needs to be addressed immediately.
The Air Pollution Control District should take immediate action to remedy this situation and protect the health of area residents. This situation has been ongoing for far too long already, and it is now time for the City of Louisville to take action on behalf of its residents.
